Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka first met 18 years ago when they went on a date that was set by a mutual friend. They began to hang out, but not romantically. Burtka was in a rocky relationship with his long-distance boyfriend at the time, which eventually ended. A week later, he and Harris went on their first date and saw a movie together.

Back in 2011, after the passage of the Marriage Equality Act in New York, the couple announced their engagement via Twitter but had previously proposed to each other five years earlier. They’d kept it hidden until same-sex marriage became legal. Harris announced on Twitter on September 8, 2014, that they had married over the weekend in Italy.
